Repelling Or Removing Shrews From Your Property in Georgia

There are quite a few small rodents that like to take up residency in your lawn or garden area, the most destructive being moles. You can tell when you have these little creatures on your property by the raised dirt mounds and tunnelsshrew.jpg you can observe about your lawn. Voles can also cause some destruction about your lawn, but typically will use previously made mole tunnels in your lawn.

Shrews also like to inhabit mole tunnels that already exist in your lawn. They will tunnel down into the existing tunnels and make a home of it. These little critters are almost cute. They typically resemble a mouse but with a few differences. Depending on the species you have in your lawn, they may have a longer and skinnier snout or nose than a regular mouse. Shrews can be different colors as well. Many are brown, dark grey, or black. Some are more than one all-over color. Their preferred diet consists mainly of insects but have been known to eat snakes, small animals, or other shrews when the occasion presents itself.

Shrews also have pointy teeth that may have a discoloration at the end. They are typically vicious little critters despite their somewhat cute appearance. Some species are venomous, although not fatal to humans, the venom can cause a reaction in some people. Shrews have been known to attack pets, will bite humans if cornered or picked up, and can cause some damage with those teeth and claws. For this reason, it is best to avoid direct contact.

So, how do you get rid of these little critters that are infesting your lawn? One good thing is that they can be caught and killed with a mousetrap. This is an inexpensive way to reduce the number of shrews on your property, or you can invest in poisons designed for shrews. The shrew eats the poison and dies, thinning out the population.

If you are not into killing the shrews to get rid of them, there are some different tactics you can try to discourage them from remaining in your lawn or from coming back. First, do your best to remove the food sources that are sustaining them. This means removing many of the things that are good places for hiding and for bugs to hang out. Get rid of piles of wood or debris, keep your lawn well maintained, and even use insecticide if necessary.
