Seed or Not to Seed Bermuda Grass in Johns Creek, Georgia.

bermuda_i00019a.jpgThere seems to be some confusion during this time of year about aeration and seeding turf grass in Johns Creek, Georgia. In our area aeration and seeding is done on cool season grasses like Fescue in the fall.

Bermuda grasses in our area are Hybrids. What does this mean? The Bermuda grass is scientifically modified for turf density, drought tolerance, shade tolerance, and color. Once the grasses are genetically modified the seeds become sterile and will not grow. Most Bermuda grasses will go to seed several times during the growing season. This is a natural habit of the grass but, unfortunately all the seeds are sterile and will not help to thicken the lawn.

The Bermuda seeds that are sold at home improvement stores are common Bermuda seed and if you are lucky enough to get the seed to germinate it will not have the same growth pattern, density, or color as the hybrid Bermuda grass. Bermuda grass needs to be seeded during the spring and summer and requires the seed to stay wet with daily watering, this can be challenging during a typical hot Georgia spring and summer. There are some seeds that claim to match the hybrid varieties.

However, with Bermuda and Zoysia grasses a balanced fertilizer program, aeration, and proper watering and mowing your lawn will spread quickly and fill in. Most of the time when we see thin lawns the mowing and watering practices are poor. Watering in the absence of rain and weekly mowing is necessary to have a thick healthy lawn. The Bermuda and Zoysia grasses spread above and below ground, so keeping it mowed low allows the grass to spread horizontally. If you mow your lawn every two weeks or even once a month your lawn will always stay thin and never fill in.
