You would think that while everything else is dormant in Alpharetta, weeds would have the courtesy to do so, as well. The trouble is, they aren’t courteous at all. Winter weeds can cause problems for homeowners just when they thinkwinter weeds.jpg they are getting a break. Let’s take a closer look at these invaders and what you can do about them, because taking care of problems in the right way foregoes the troubles that come from taking care of them inappropriately.

First things first, many homeowners assume that since their turfgrass is dormant, it would be ok to spray a nonspecific weed killer on the weeds they see poking through in their lawns. This is not going to be the best practice, most winter-dormant grasses aren’t completely dormant during the winter. This includes centipedegrass and zoysia. This means that your grass will soak up that herbicide and be killed off and you will be left with a patchy lawn. One exception to this rule is Bermudagrass. However, if you decide you want to spray herbicide on your bermuda lawn, you have to examine the roots of the plants and make sure that there is absolutely no green left on the plants. If there is any green at all, the grass is not completely dormant and should not be exposed to herbicides.

If you are set on using an herbicide to rid your lawn of winter weeds, there are two things you can do. One, use a specific type of herbicide that is safe for your grass type, maybe one that targets broadleaf weeds, if that is what you are dealing with. If you only have a nonspecific herbicide available, there are some steps you can take in order to kill off the weeds in your lawn but spare your grass.

3 Steps for a Healthy Lawn this Winter

This method is similar to what you might think of if we told you to paint your weeds, and just your weeds, with herbicide. A simple way to do this is to take a garden tool, a hand trowel or rake is a great option, and wrap a cloth around it. Saturate the cloth with the herbicide and take care to only paint the leaves and stem of the weeds that are your targets, above the level of your grass. Don’t try to get the roots or close to the grass. This method takes a few weeks to see results, but it is safest for your lawn.
