4 Most Common Spring Diseases That Infect Your Lawn in Alpharetta, Georgia.

As Spring approaches and your grass in Alpharetta, Georgia begins to leave its dormancy stage, you may notice some spots or patches that aren’t coming back well, or that your grass doesn’t seem as healthy as last year. There are four common diseases that will most likely present in your lawn during the Spring season, if you have them. Spring Dead Spot

Most commonly seen in yards of Bermuda grass although can affect some strains of Zoysiagrasses as well. Circles or spots of dead grass can vary in size from a few inches to a few feet. The centers of the dead circles may even be overtaken by weeds after the grass gives way and fully dies.

Brown Patch

Fescue grass is usually the victim of brown patch disease,  seen in the picture below, but the fungus that causes it really isn’t that picky. As the temperature and the humidity rise, the fungus becomes more active. As it begins to attack your grass you may notice areas that look wet, wilted, or starting to mat down. The disease works outward from a center point and you may notice it is surrounded by a dark ring. This ring is often most noticeable in the morning while there is still dew about. Patch Diseases

Bermuda and Zoysia grasses are likely to present these diseases. There are several different types of patch diseases that you may notice in your yard, most of them brought on by some specific conditions. Most of the fungi that cause many of these diseases like a wet, moist habitat. They live in the thatch and become active and most destructive when temperatures rise. Dollar spot disease presents itself in light tan colored circles on your lawn. The fungus responsible for dollar spot likes cool, damp, dewy mornings. This disease can also be caused from stress on the turf such a drought.
