As the summer draws to a close and autumn begins to set in, the last mowing of the season is probably creeping up on most homeowners as their grass begins to go dormant for the colder weather of the later fall and winter months.end of season mower care.jpg This is a wonderful time for anyone that has and uses a lawn mower, whether a push mower or a riding one, to do some great end of season care and maintenance. This type of behavior helps your machine to run smoother, better, and longer. No more struggling to start your mower next spring! Check out our trusted tips and tricks to get your mower winter ready so when spring rolls around next year, you are ready to get back to it!

Give it a good cleaning.

One of the best things you can do for your mower is to keep it pretty clean. Take the time to wash out the undercarriage. Chip out any dried and packed grass that could get in the way of the blades. You don’t want that type of buildup down there as it can cause problems later on that could have been easily avoided by regular cleaning and maintenance.

3 Reasons Your Mower may not be Mowing Correctly

Sharpen the blades.

If you notice that your blades are looking pretty dull while you are down there cleaning out the undercarriage, either give them a good sharpening, maybe buy new ones if yours are at the end of their life, or put it on the calendar to do before the first mowing of the next season.

Maintain the engine.

There are some basic things that you can do with a lawnmower engine that are similar to your car engine. You are going to want to check the spark plugs and replace them if they need it and check your oil and replace it if it is looking dark and black or has debris floating around in it. It is really important if you don’t know how to do this to check your mower manual for directions. It is also a great time to replace the air filter that your mower uses. Most mowers use an inexpensive type, so don’t worry about a large bill!

Drain the gas out of the tank.

This is often the biggest culprit for trouble starting your mower in the spring after your mower sits all through the winter. Old gas just causes problems, so either run the gas out of your mower, or drain it out to keep things in working order next season!
