When you hear the word ‘grass’ you likely think of a green lawn, an expanse of trimmed and maintained grass, or something like a golf course. We love our planted and green lawns, but there are more types of grasses in Cumming, Georgiapink-muhly-grass-2060600_1280 than are commonly used to plant lawns. Grasses that have an eloquent, lovely, interesting, or beautiful appearance can be used to really take your landscape to the next level. Incorporating some ornamental grasses in with the flowers, rocks, and other decorations will add texture and visual interest to your flower beds boxes, fence lines, and pots on the porch.

So what do you need to know about ornamental grass before you rush out to get some? The truth is, they are essentially very similar to the grass you are used to taking care of in your lawn. There are cool season ornamental grasses that grow best in cooler temperatures, and there are warm season ornamental grasses that grow best in the warmer temperatures. The cool season ornamental grasses will begin to green up earlier in the year, in the spring time, and then can become dormant through the hot summer months. Some cool season grasses will even be able to stay alive and beautiful through the winter months if the weather doesn’t get too cold. The warm season ornamental grasses are going to be the ones that you can show off during the hotter months of the summer. It can be a good idea to mix a few types in your landscaping so there is always something to look at, instead of having an empty and dead box.

 Dirt Mounds in Your Lawn

Many ornamental grasses can be grown in a sort of ‘clump’ of grass that looks beautiful when fleshed out and taken care of. The grasses that grow in this version are easy to take care of and non-invasive. They are great varieties that can be mixed in with the other flowers you have or perennials without you having to worry about them spreading and taking over the whole place.

Those that are not in the ‘clump’ growing category can be harder to maintain. These ones are rhizome forming and are commonly called running grass. These spread through underground root systems and will spread wherever possible. Be sure to plant these in places you are going to be able to maintain them and won’t overtake other plants.
